Lisa Shim

My name is Lisa Shim. I’ve been working as a freelance children’s book illustrator and digital artist since 2017. Throughout my adult life and childhood, I’ve lived with disability and hardships that have shaped who I am today. I have lived with epilepsy and injuries from fibrous dysplasia for most of my life. Despite this, I believe that my struggles have allowed me to grow and lean into my challenges in ways that I didn’t think was possible. During my recovery phases, I focused on developing my art and design skills further with my iPad and software such as Procreate and Adobe Fresco. I have been able to build and accumulate a wide portfolio that features my artistic passions.

Depictions of light, colour, and emotions have always been my obsession. Nostalgia and ephemerality of life’s fleeting - but precious- moments are a few of my favorite subjects to capture. No matter the style or story, I hope that my illustrations will connect with readers in an authentic and emotional sense - and I strive elevate the author’s message.

With a background in Applied Arts and Design from VIU (Vancouver Island University), English Tutoring and English Studies, my passion has always been about helping others communicate and create understanding. In addition, growing up Korean/Canadian has given me a diverse perspective and I hope to provide representation of all children through my illustrations as much as possible.

I believe that storytelling is the cornerstone of empathy. Thus, it is my belief that a good picture book can open up many doors. No matter who you are or where you are from, sitting down with loved ones to enjoy a picture book helps to build bridges for understanding and empathy. Through children’s books, I believe that no subject is too difficult to tackle - which brings me much joy in knowing that my illustrations can play a role in helping others build compassion and understanding.

As your illustrator, I will not only illustrate your vision but will strive to create impactful depictions to your readers that create rich context and connection.

Testimonials

“Needed an artist during a Pandemic lock down, one who could work online, work fast and work collaboratively - more importantly one who could create faces with a variety of emotions. My art teacher told me faces were the hardest and it seemed impossible, but when we looked at Lisa's art, we knew she would be our best choice for the rather impossible task of making faces emote the complex emotions of empathy, growth, courage, belonging, self care, struggles and mindful self. More than just able to be creative, Lisa was ahead of deadlines, worked easily online and found ways to collaborate with the writers, publisher, and copy editor in the most efficient way.”

“Thank you Lisa for all your creative work to make the world a calmer, kinder, and safer place.”
